KNOWING THE SYMPTOMS CAN SAVE A LIFE

Signs of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness

Substance abuse and mental illness can often go hand in hand. To understand one, you need to understand both.

In some cases, a person who is addicted to a substance may develop a mental illness simply as a result of using the substance over a period of time. What some people don’t immediately realize, is that substance use is a disease.

Using drugs and alcohol gradually changes the body and mind to the point where it can have drastic effects on the user.

A person who is abusing a substance can begin by showing signs of changes in normal behavior such as mood swings, irritability, inattentiveness, irrational thought patterns, and other changes.

Substance abuse can often start accidentally and then progress to a more purposeful level once a person has become fully addicted. The reason that addiction is so difficult a disease to overcome is that both the body and mind become dependent on the substance a person is addicted to.

The process of addiction is often accompanied by psychological changes, brought on by not only the side effects of the substance, but the altering effect the substance has on the brain and body’s chemistry.

Further signs of substance abuse can include constantly seeking out sources of medication or alcohol, the inability to cope with stressful situations, withdrawal from friends and loved ones, and even depression.

This is why we believe mental health treatment is an important part of addiction recovery. Our medical professionals will work to identify both the mental and physical symptoms and side effects of addiction and work to treat them through the process of dual diagnosis.

A well-rounded approach to recovery is key to successful treatment.

How to Treat Mental Health and Addiction

We believe at our core that removing the harmful substance is not the cure to addiction nor a proper treatment for one’s mental health concerns. Instead, we focus on care that is designed to treat the client in many ways. We treat the physical, psychological, spiritual, and social aspects of addiction in order to determine the underlying causes and help to change negative behaviors into positive ones.

No single client is the same, so how we treat mental health and addiction for one person will not be the same treatment that another person needs. This is why we have developed a wide array of treatment options and therapeutic modalities to give each patient a customized treatment plan geared towards their success.

Detoxification

Most of our treatment plans begin with the initial stage of detoxification. Detoxification is the process of removing harmful substances from the body through either natural or medication-assisted means.

Detox can be a harrowing experience for both the person and their loved ones, especially if it is attempted without the aid of medical professionals.

Detox is accompanied by withdrawal, where the body reacts to the lack of the addictive substance. Symptoms of withdrawal can vary wildly from mild nausea and fatigue to severe life-threatening symptoms like heart complications, seizures, depression, and suicidal tendencies.

That is why detox is always best performed in a safe, medically supervised environment. We provide comfortable and calm amenities supported by our expert medical staff to ensure that the detox process is as safe as possible and will lead to a smoother recovery.

Dual Diagnosis Therapy

The next stage of treatment will vary depending on the client but generally involves our dual-diagnosis therapy.

Dual diagnosis involves treating both the physical addiction and the underlying mental illness that usually accompanies addiction.

In some cases, addiction and the side effects of substance abuse can cause mental illness, and in other cases, people seek out a particular substance in order to self-medicate a mental illness and in turn become addicted to that medication.

This can be alcohol, prescription drugs, or even illicit drugs, that a person uses to cope with underlying mental illness. We understand that there can be physical, mental, spiritual, and even social causes that lead to addiction and that’s why we use our dual diagnosis therapy in combination with other therapeutic modalities to treat mental health and addiction.

Aftercare

The recovery process doesn’t end after detox and therapy. Part of the process includes providing services to help our clients stay on the path to recovery. We provide support groups, counseling, and other services to help clients after their treatment ends.

Addiction recovery is a day-by-day process and stress and anxiety from daily life can cause a person to relapse. Having that extra support is crucial to staying on the path to sobriety.

Our treatment process is not about just making clients “well”, it’s a lifestyle of health and wellness that we try to instill in everyone from our clients, to our staff, and our families.

Not sure where to begin?
No worries. We are here to help.

Our caring treatment coordinators are standing by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help you make the decision to leave drugs & alcohol in the past.

WHY CHOOSE US

When to Get Help for Substance Abuse and Mental Health

The simple answer to this question is as soon as possible. However, we know that it can be difficult to know when a substance has become a problem and when help is truly needed. After all, many people may become addicted by accident, merely because they take prescribed medication a little too frequently and develop a dependency.

In this way, the proper time to seek help is when you find that you can no longer live a day-to-day life without that substance. Once that substance has become such an integral part of your daily life that you cannot do without it, that is when addiction has taken hold.

If you or someone you know has reached this point, then it’s time to get help. Addiction is a life-altering disease that can be difficult or even impossible to beat without the right help.

Seeking out substance abuse treatment and mental health treatment can not only help you end your addiction, but it can also save your life.
